We have been to Alsace a few times as it is only a short 2-hour drive from where we now live in Zurich, Switzerland.
Alsace really opened our eyes to the Riesling grape. If you are from the USA you may be unimpressed with some of the sweet Riesling that is exported to the States. But if you take the time to understand fine, dry Riesling it is really a special treat. And in Alsace you can find incredibly good bottles for under 20 dollars! The acidity and minerality on these wines is brilliant.
