Piedmont is special to our family on many levels. For one thing, it is home to Barolo and Barbaresco wines. These wines are made from Nebbiolo and the finer examples are simply outstanding. They tend to require a little ageing in the bottle, but they have beautiful tannic structure and there is just something about them that draws you in. Try them and you’ll see what we mean and the video below give more details.

We also love the Barbera wines (which I do not cover in the video) that come from the area around Nizza. Nizza is one of Italy’s newest DOCG (an Italian designation used to indicate a quality wine appelation) focused on high-end Barbera grown on the sites where this grape has been cultivated since Roman times.

We love this area so much, in fact, that we purchased a rental property (scroll fown for the photo) in the middle of vineyards within a UNESCO protected area near Nizza. And we invite you to come stay here if you are interested! Click here for more information.

Not only are the wines in this area excellent, but it is also a “foodie” destination with great Italian cuisine. I should mention as well that nearby Alba is the home of the world-renowned white Alba Truffle for which there is a dedicated festival every year in the fall when these delicacies can be sampled.
