Tuscany has a big reputation, but there’s a good reason for that. Tuscany is a food and wine paradise. We have explored all throughout this region on many different trips and it never disappoints. Whether you are staying in the busy, renaissance capital of Florence or the smaller towns of Montepulciano, Sienna, San Gimignano, or other smaller locations more off the beaten trail, all of it is beautiful in food and wine terms.

The Sangiovese grape is king here and you would know it by the names of the Tuscan regions such as Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, or the famous Brunello di Montalcino.

In more recent years there has also been a trend toward creating fine Tuscan wines from grapes that are not native or typical for the region and you may have heard these referred to as “Super Tuscans”. These tend to be created from grapes more common to the Bordeaux region in France (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) and some of the finer example from Italy are really special. In fact some (e.g, Sassicaia, Ornellaia) have a cult following (and the pricetag to go with it).
