Cascina Berchi is our lovingly restored 19th-century farmhouse in the hilltop village of Fontanile, in the Monferrato wine country of Piedmont.

Fontanile sits within the UNESCO-recognized vineyard landscape of Piedmont, surrounded by Barbera, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Arneis, Chardonnay and Moscato vineyards. The village’s name comes from the Latin fontanili, reflecting an area historically rich in springs.

In the heart of Monferrato

From the rear terrace and balcony of Cascina Berchi, the view stretches across the vineyards of Monferrato toward the Alpine arc of northwestern Italy. For wine lovers, the celebrated regions of Barolo and Barbaresco are within easy driving distance, while the Nizza DOCG area begins almost at the doorstep.

Nizza is one of Piedmont’s most important areas for Barbera. The appellation was elevated to DOCG status in 2014, reflecting its focus on structured, age-worthy wines made from Barbera.

An ideal base for exploring Piedmont

Cascina Berchi is well placed for day trips throughout the region. Nearby destinations include Acqui Terme, Asti and Alba, while the Langhe wine country is close enough for leisurely winery visits and long lunches in the hill towns.

Alba is especially famous for its white truffles, celebrated each autumn during the International Alba White Truffle Fair. Beyond Piedmont, the Valle d’Aosta, Milan and the Ligurian coast can also be reached for longer excursions.

Wine, food and the rhythms of the region

Piedmont rewards a slower style of travel. The pleasure is in moving between vineyards and villages, tasting local wines, finding a restaurant for a long lunch, and letting the landscape set the pace.
